Overview

Gate.io is one of the oldest continuously-operating crypto exchanges still in mainstream use, founded in 2013 as Bter.com (rebranded to Gate.io in 2017). Headquartered in the Cayman Islands and led by founder Lin Han, the platform has built its identity around two things: breadth of asset listings and a wide range of structured financial products. As of mid-2026, Gate.io supports over 1,400 cryptocurrencies — making it the broadest legitimate exchange by coin count, just edging out KuCoin.

Gate.io serves around 15 million users globally, with particular strength in Asia, Eastern Europe, and parts of Latin America. The platform holds licenses in select jurisdictions but has avoided the aggressive US market push that landed competitors like KuCoin and Binance in regulatory trouble.

Gate.io has differentiated itself through innovation in earn products and structured yields — the platform was an early pioneer of dual currency investments, automatic rebalancing portfolios, and on-chain yield aggregation through its Wealth Management arm.

Fees

Gate.io’s fee structure is competitive without being industry-leading:

  • Spot trading: 0.20% maker / 0.20% taker at base (Lv 1) tier
  • Futures: 0.015% maker / 0.05% taker

Holding GT (the native token) provides discounts of up to 55% on trading fees. VIP tiers (based on 30-day trading volume) can access maker rebates and minimal taker fees. Fee structures are competitive with Binance for high-volume traders.

Deposits via crypto are free. Fiat deposits via bank transfer typically free or low-cost. Withdrawals carry standard network fees plus a small platform fee.

Security

Gate.io’s security track record is strong but with some scars:

  • No major exchange-level hack in its 12+ years of operation
  • Proof of Reserves audited monthly by Armanino LLP with cryptographic verification
  • Cold storage for the vast majority of assets
  • Multi-signature wallet architecture
  • 24/7 security monitoring
  • Two-factor authentication, withdrawal whitelisting, anti-phishing codes
  • Bug bounty programme

A notable historical incident: in February 2015 (when the platform was still known as Bter), approximately 7,000 BTC were stolen from a cold wallet, with the founder and CEO later admitting to inadequate security practices at the time. Gate.io fully reimbursed affected users over the following months and overhauled its security architecture. No subsequent breaches have occurred.

The platform also operates an Investor Protection Fund with over $500 million in committed reserves to cover unforeseen losses.

Supported Assets

This is Gate.io’s most distinctive feature. The platform’s listing strategy is:

  • Major and mid-cap coins: All major assets are well-supported with strong liquidity
  • Long-tail altcoins: Hundreds of speculative tokens that few other major exchanges list
  • New launches: Aggressive listing through the Startup launchpad and IEO programmes
  • Tokenised assets: Growing selection of tokenised real-world assets and structured products
  • Cross-chain support: Over 100 supported blockchains and Layer 2 networks

As with KuCoin, the breadth comes with higher exposure to scams and pump-and-dump schemes than you’d find on more conservative platforms. Gate.io’s listing review is documented and reasonably rigorous, but it’s still possible to encounter abandoned or fraudulent tokens. Always do your own research on smaller listings.

Trading Experience

Gate.io offers a comprehensive feature set across multiple trading products:

Spot Trading: Standard interface with full order book, depth charts, and advanced order types. The interface is functional but feels dated compared to Bybit or OKX.

Futures: USDT-margined and BTC-margined perpetual contracts with up to 100x leverage. Liquidity is adequate for major pairs but thinner than Binance or Bybit on lesser contracts.

Options: Available on select major coins, though less developed than OKX or Deribit.

Copy Trading: A growing copy trading platform with verified leader stats. Less mature than Bybit’s offering but improving rapidly.

Trading Bots: Free grid bots, DCA bots, and infinite grid strategies. Reasonably well-implemented.

Wealth Management: Structured products including dual investment, automatic compounders, and on-chain yield strategies — one of Gate.io’s standout categories.

The mobile apps are functional but less polished than top-tier competitors. The desktop platform is dense but capable.

Earn and Staking

Gate.io has one of the most extensive earn portfolios of any major exchange:

  • Lending: HODL & Earn programmes with rates depending on lock-up period
  • Staking: 60+ proof-of-stake assets supported
  • Liquidity mining: Multi-token pools with rotating reward tokens
  • Dual Currency: Yield-enhanced products with downside exposure to volatility
  • Auto Invest: Programmed DCA into selected portfolios
  • Startup pool: Stake established tokens to receive allocations of new launches

Yields are often higher than mainstream competitors, with the trade-off being lower transparency about underlying yield sources and counterparty risk in some products.

Customer Support

24/7 live chat is available, but response quality is inconsistent. During normal periods, support is responsive and reasonably knowledgeable. During market volatility or major launch events, wait times can stretch significantly. The help centre is comprehensive in scope but sometimes lacks depth on more obscure topics.

Gate.io’s community engagement on Telegram and Twitter is active and can sometimes provide faster answers than official channels.

Restrictions

Gate.io is not available to US users. The platform restricts access in several other jurisdictions including Canada and Singapore (in some respects). Mandatory KYC is required for fiat deposits and full account features as of 2024.

Who Should Use Gate.io

Gate.io is the strongest choice for:

  • Altcoin enthusiasts who want the broadest possible selection
  • Yield seekers wanting comprehensive earn product options
  • Early-launch hunters who want access to new token sales
  • International users in regions with limited exchange options
  • Bot traders wanting free automated strategies on a broad asset base

Less ideal for:

  • US users (not accessible)
  • Beginners (interface and asset breadth are intimidating)
  • Security purists who want exchanges with zero historical incidents
  • High-leverage derivatives traders (Bybit and OKX offer better depth)

Verdict

Gate.io is a specialist platform with mainstream feature breadth. For users who actively explore the long tail of crypto — staking obscure coins, hunting early launches, trying structured yield products — Gate.io’s offering is genuinely deep and often best-in-class. For users who just want to buy and hold mainstream coins, the platform’s competitors offer simpler, more polished alternatives.

The decade-plus operating history without major incident is a meaningful asset, and the broad licensing posture (without the recent regulatory drama affecting some peers) makes Gate.io a comparatively stable choice. The trade-off is that the interface and customer experience feel like they were designed for the previous generation of crypto users rather than the modern mainstream.
