Overview

CoinTracker sits between the pure tax software (Koinly, CoinLedger) and the pure portfolio trackers (CoinStats). Founded in 2017 by Jon Lerner and Chandan Lodha, backed by Y Combinator and later serious VCs, headquartered in San Francisco. Its identity is different from the competition: this isn’t tax software with a portfolio dashboard bolted on — it’s a portfolio tracker that grew into tax software.

That heritage shows. CoinTracker’s interface is more like a wealth management app than an accounting tool. You’ll see real-time portfolio value, allocation charts, and unrealised gains alongside your tax preparation flow. For users who want ongoing portfolio visibility and end-of-year tax reporting from the same product, this is genuinely useful.

The other differentiator: CoinTracker is the official Coinbase tax partner. Coinbase users get one-click sync, deeper integration, and Coinbase-provided support routing. If your portfolio lives largely on Coinbase, this matters.

Coverage and integrations

CoinTracker covers 500+ exchanges and 300+ wallets. Coverage is broadly comparable to Koinly and CoinLedger for major venues. DeFi coverage is competent — Uniswap, Aave, Curve, Compound, PancakeSwap — with reasonable transaction categorisation.

The Coinbase integration is materially better than any competitor. If you use Coinbase (including Coinbase Advanced and Coinbase Wallet), the sync captures transaction data with a completeness other tools can’t match. Coinbase provides CoinTracker with data feeds unavailable via public API.

Ethereum wallet handling is strong — the tool automatically detects and categorises Uniswap swaps, staking rewards from Lido, LP position changes, and NFT trades in a way that’s less error-prone than either competitor.

The tax reporting

CoinTracker generates the standard US forms (Form 8949, Schedule D, income summary) and exports cleanly to TurboTax, TaxAct, and H&R Block. TurboTax integration is polished — not quite as clean as CoinLedger’s, but close enough that most users won’t notice a difference.

International support is present but weaker than Koinly. UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany are supported with basic country-specific handling but without Koinly’s depth of local rules. For a US-primary user with occasional international considerations, this is fine. For someone whose tax situation genuinely spans multiple jurisdictions, Koinly’s specific-country logic remains stronger.

Ongoing portfolio tracking

CoinTracker’s ongoing portfolio dashboard is a real feature, not a marketing add-on. You get:

  • Live portfolio value across all connected accounts
  • Historical performance charts
  • Asset allocation views
  • Unrealised gains/losses (useful for year-end tax loss harvesting decisions)
  • Mobile apps for iOS and Android

If you’re already going to pay for tax software, getting a competent portfolio tracker as part of the package is genuine value. Users who currently use a separate portfolio tracker (Delta, CoinStats, or a spreadsheet) may be able to consolidate.

Pricing

Four tiers, annual:

  • Base — $59, 100 transactions
  • Prime — $199, 1,000 transactions
  • Ultra — $599, 3,000 transactions
  • Custom — negotiated for large portfolios

Pricing is higher than Koinly and CoinLedger at the top tiers. The Base tier is competitively priced for its transaction limit.

Free tier includes portfolio tracking and a tax preview limited to 25 transactions — enough to evaluate the tool before purchasing.

Where CoinTracker wins

For Coinbase users, this is the tool. The official partnership means better data quality, quicker sync, and integrated support paths. For users who want tax software and portfolio tracking in one product, CoinTracker is the only serious option in this list.

The Ethereum wallet handling is the best in the category — if your ETH activity is meaningful (LP positions, staking, DeFi), CoinTracker’s categorisation will save you the most manual review time.

Where CoinTracker loses

Non-Coinbase, non-US users get less differentiation. Koinly matches or exceeds CoinTracker’s country coverage and integrations for most jurisdictions. Pricing at the higher tiers is genuinely expensive compared to Koinly.

For pure tax-time users (people who don’t want ongoing portfolio tracking) the portfolio features are dead weight in the interface. Some users will find CoinLedger’s “just do the taxes” focus cleaner.

The verdict

CoinTracker scores 4.4/5. A strong all-rounder with two clear differentiators: the Coinbase partnership and the built-in portfolio tracking. If either matters to you, this is the pick. If neither does — you don’t use Coinbase, you don’t want portfolio tracking — Koinly or CoinLedger will serve you better for less money.

The Coinbase partnership alone justifies the choice for a significant chunk of the US crypto audience.

The Verdict

CoinTracker scores 4.4 out of 5.
