Overview
Trezor made the first hardware wallet. That’s not marketing — the Trezor One shipped in 2014, before Ledger existed as a company. SatoshiLabs, its Prague-based parent, was founded in 2013 by Marek Palatinus (the same Slush who runs Slushpool, one of Bitcoin’s oldest mining pools) and Pavol Rusnák. The company’s approach has been unusually consistent for 12 years: full open-source, minimal branding, and a stubborn refusal to compromise on principles even when the market rewarded competitors who did.
The current lineup is two devices: the Trezor Safe 3 ($79) and the newer Trezor Safe 5 ($169). Both use a Secure Element chip (Infineon’s Optiga Trust M) — a change from earlier Trezor devices that relied on general-purpose microcontrollers. This addition closed the gap with Ledger on physical attack resistance while preserving what matters more to Trezor’s audience: fully open-source firmware, hardware schematics published, and a security model that anyone with the skills can verify independently.
The security architecture
Trezor’s security philosophy differs from Ledger’s in one meaningful way: everything is auditable. The firmware source code, the bootloader, the schematic — all publicly available. This means researchers can (and do) find vulnerabilities, which sounds bad but is actually the point. Public scrutiny is how you catch bugs before attackers do.
The addition of the Secure Element in the Safe 3 and Safe 5 addresses the one legitimate criticism of older Trezors — that the general-purpose STM32 chip could theoretically be attacked with physical access and specialised equipment. It’s now a solved problem for the newer models. Trezor’s twelve-year track record is unmatched in the space: no successful remote attack, no data breach comparable to Ledger’s 2020 leak, no reputation-damaging product controversies.
The one persistent vulnerability class — supply chain attacks (someone intercepting your device before it reaches you) — is one Trezor addresses through hologram seals, direct-from-manufacturer purchase encouragement, and clear onboarding warnings. You should verify the device before setup regardless of the brand.
Trezor Suite
The companion app, Trezor Suite, is available for desktop, web, and mobile. It’s meaningfully less flashy than Ledger Live — the design is functional rather than beautiful — but does everything a hardware wallet companion should: send/receive, exchange integration (via Invity), staking for supported coins, portfolio tracking. Users coming from Ledger Live may find Suite spare. Users who value quiet competence over polish will prefer it.
Where Trezor wins
For anyone who values open-source firmware, Bitcoin-focused users, and users who prioritise a clean security track record over feature breadth, Trezor is the correct choice. The Safe 3 at $79 matches Ledger’s entry price and outperforms it philosophically. If your threat model includes “the manufacturer might one day push a firmware update that changes what my device does” — which is a legitimate concern after Ledger’s Recover episode — Trezor’s twelve years without such an incident is a meaningful signal.
The Safe 5’s colour touchscreen makes it the most usable premium hardware wallet on the market, arguably including the Ledger Stax.
Where Trezor loses
Coin support is narrower than Ledger’s. Trezor supports 8,000+ coins/tokens but the depth of native integration lags — some coins require third-party wallets (Electrum for Bitcoin advanced users, various web wallets for Ethereum ecosystem tokens). If you actively use a broad altcoin portfolio and want everything managed from one companion app, Ledger Live still edges Trezor Suite.
Passphrase management is powerful but unintuitive for new users — Trezor’s advanced features (hidden wallets via passphrase, Shamir Backup) reward experienced users but can confuse beginners.
The verdict
Trezor scores 4.7/5. The highest score in our hardware wallet category, and deservedly. The combination of full open-source firmware, twelve years without a security breach, and a Secure Element chip on newer models is the most credible security posture in the category. Suite is competent, not exciting.
If you’re choosing between Trezor and Ledger, ask yourself: do you value coin breadth and polish (Ledger), or open-source principles and a clean track record (Trezor)? Both are defensible.
